Announcing his move on Twitter Dickson tweeted to his fans: “After the best 11 years with the X Factor, it's time for me to check out and cut loose.”

Whilst few would give him a second glance on the street, Dickson has amassed a raft of high profile roles as a voice artist, working on hit TV shows such as Britain's Got Talent and Never Mind the Buzzcocks to Harry Enfield and Chums and Live at the Apollo.

Dickson’s departure is just one of a slew of changes planned for the talent contest which will see new judges Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw take the place of Mel B and Louis Walsh.

Long-term host Dermot O’Leary will also call it quits, to be replaced by Olly Murs and Caroline Flack.
