The Twitter account of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has posted a provocative image seemingly showing president Barack Obama holding a gun against his own head.

The silhouette has a US flag lapel and in the context of the threat, presumably representing POTUS, deals a blow after the nations reached a landmark agreement on the Middle Eastern nation's nuclear production.

The tweet, sent during the weekend, sparked polarised debate on US and Iranian foreign policy.

The statement was lifted from one made by supreme leader Khameni 18 July: “"We welcome no war, nor do we initiate any war, but if any war happens, the one who will emerge (the) loser will be the aggressive and criminal US.”

Iranian state leaders make ardent use of the social network despite the fact it is blocked in the country.

Last September Dick Costolo , then the chief executive of Twitter, challenged Iranian president Hassan Rouhani over Twitter's sensorship in the country.
