They have already conquered the internet but now everyone's favourite whiskered companions are set to make an appearance at New York’s Museum of the Moving Image for a special exhibition focussed solely on the internet meme.

How Cats Took Over The Internet documents phenomenons such as ‘Grumpy Cat’, lolcats and Caturday to showcase some of the most famed creatures to grace the internet.

Claiming to take a ‘critical look’ at the ‘deceptively frivolous phenomenon’ the curators promise to delve into just what it is that makes cat pictures and videos such a potent mix for web users.

Concentrating on ‘anthropomorphism, the aesthetics of cuteness, the Bored at Work Network, and the rise of user-generated content’ there will be catnip for attendees in the form of looping videos of the web’s most popular cats.

The exhibition will take place between 7 August and 31 January.
