The online retailer has reported that global order growth increased 18 per cent on Prime Day compared to last year’s Black Friday, with growth surging 266 per cent from the same day in 2014. According to the company, Amazon Prime members ordered 34.4 million items total.

Greg Greely, vice president of Amazon Prime, said: Going into this, we weren't sure whether Prime Day would be a one-time thing or if it would become an annual event. After yesterday’s results, we'll definitely be doing this again.”

It also said that more new members tried Prime than any other day in the company’s history.

In the UK, the top seller of the day was the Amazon Fire TV Stick. Globally, it was also the best-selling product.

Excluding Amazon devices, ‘Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy’ was the best-seller in the US while the ‘Lenovo FLEX 10 10.1-inch Multimode Touchscreen Notebook’ took the top spot in the UK.
