Diageo promotes James Thompson to North American CMO

Diageo has named James Thompson to replace Peter McDonough as North American chief marketing and innovation officer.

Currently, Thompson serves as managing director of global reserves at Diageo. Prior to that, he spent six years as chief marketing officer of the company’s Asia-Pacific branch.

Thompson will assume his new role on 1 August.

He takes over from McDonough who is leaving the company after nearly nine years.

Syl Saller, chief marketing officer at Diageo, said of Thompson’s appointment: “James brings with him a unique breadth of experience, having held a range of marketing, general and commercial management roles during his two decades within Diageo. His strength in leadership, creative rigor and proven track record in building brands ranging from Guinness to Johnnie Walker Blue Label will be a huge asset to our North America business.”

Diageo’s other brands include Crown Royal, Ketel One, and Captain Morgan.
