The remorseless decline of the global PC market has continued apace over the second quarter, according to the latest industry snapshot compiled by IDC which showed the sector slumping 11.8 per cent over the period.

This brought the total number of PC’s sold down to 66.1m over the three month period but for every loser there is a winner and Apple has profited from this consumer shift to see its market share rise from 5.9 to 7.8 per cent over the year – making it the only PC manufacturer to increase market share.

Lenovo continues to dominate PC shipments with a market share of 20.3 per cent, ahead of HP and Dell with an 18.5 and 14.5 per cent share of the market respectively. Acer and ASUS bring up the rear with market shares of 6.6 and 6.5 per cent.

Whilst the double digit decline seems precipitous it is exaggerated by a brief sales spike a year ago following the discontinuation of Windows XP which forced many to upgrade, with most analysts predicting single digit declines going forward.

Key to the sectors future will be the high-profile launch of Windows 10 which will begin its public debut towards the end of this month with many holding off on purchases until the new software is out.
