John Lewis is set to introduce a small charge for customers using its click and collect service.

The retailer said it is adding the charge to the service, which has been place as early as 2008, because the current structure is “unsustainable”.

Andy Street, John Lewis managing director, said: “We are sure customers will understand why we are doing this.

“There is a huge logistical operation behind this system and quite frankly it’s unsustainable. We consider ourselves to be leaders and we want to take the lead on this.”

John Lewis states that in 2008, there was only 350,000 click and collect orders, a number which grew to six million in 2014 – accessible from 360 collection points across the country.
