Google has reportedly hired British designer Thomas Heatherwick, the man behind the Olympic Cauldron at the London Games, to work on its new £1bn London headquarters.

Heatherwick is currently in the process of designing the search giant's new Californian headquarters and it is understood he will now cast his eye over the UK counterpart, according to Business Insider.

The news comes after various reports emerged that Google has rejected proposals from architecture firm Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) after failing to see eye-to-eye on its designs.

Heatherwick Studios, the company owned by Heatherwick, and Google both declined to comment on the news.

In June 2013 Heatherwick was forced to deny accusations that the design for the Olympic Cauldron was lifted from a concept presented to Games organisers in 2007.

At the time, New York design studio Atopia pointed out "striking similarities" between its submission and the scheme ultimately built by Heatherwick after being un-gagged by the end of a restrictive non-disclosure order in place since 2007.
