HSBC chairman Douglas Flint has said that that a return to the name Midland Bank is the "odds-on favourite" as the bank considers its re-branding options.

His comments follow last week's announcement that the HSBC name and branding would disappear in the UK as part of an international restructure which could see 8,000 British jobs cut.

HSBC will have to separate its UK businesses following the implementation of tough rules that will force banks to ringfence their high street operations from their investment arms.

Flint's comments were reportedly made after after Wednesday night's Mansion House City event, according to the Financial Times.

HSBC merged with Midland Bank in 1992 and replaced its branding in 1999 to create a consistent identity.
