Scientists are reportedly close to devising a new form of flexible battery which can be stretched, twisted and folded without compromising performance, potentially ushering in a new era of super powered smartwatches.

The current generation of smartwatches are hamstrung by their relatively puny battery life, restricting the Apple Watch to just three hours of calls and six hours of music.

Inspired by a technique known as kirigami the manufacturing process sees pairs of cuts made to the sides of batteries to give them the necessary flex.

Writing in Scientific Reports the research team wrote: “It is expected that the kirigami LIBs [lithium-ion batteries] are able to resolve one of the bottlenecks in the development of wearable devices by providing a scalable solution for a stretchable energy source.”

If the new design works as expected Arizona State University believe that lithium ion batteries could be created that can be bent in any direction using cheap and readily available materials.
