Facebook’s Messenger, the social network’s standalone messaging app, now has 700 million monthly active users.

Chief executive officer Mark Zuckerburg announced the number during the company’s annual investor meeting on 11 June.

The app has been growing at a rapid rate in recent months. According to Re/code, it had 600 million users in late March and has added 200 million in the past seven months.

The company has made a number of moves recently to ramp up Messenger’s offerings. In March it announced a payments system for the app that allows users to transfer money to one another.

In April, it made Messenger available on web browsers. The company unveiled a website that allows users to chat with friends and family outside of Facebook’s site by logging onto messenger.com.
