National Hockey League (NHL) sponsorship revenue is expected to reach $447m for the 2014-2015 season, up 9.2 per cent from the year prior, according to sponsorship information and analysis firm IEG.

New league sponsors include GoPro, Kellogg’s, Samsung, and Procter & Gamble’s Crest and Oral-B.

The increase beats IEG’s projected 4 per cent rise in overall sponsorship spending and 4.4 per cent increase in overall sports spending.

William Chipps, IEG Sponsorship Report senior editor, said: “Without a doubt, the 2014-2015 season represents a banner year for the NHL in terms of sponsorship revenue.”

This year, quick-service restaurants replaced automakers as the move active category to sponsor the league and its teams. According to the research, these restaurants are 5.4 times more likely to sponsor NHL hockey than the average of all sponsors.
