Boots is set to cut 700 jobs in the UK as part of a nationwide restructuring scheme.

The high street chemist, which was acquired by US drug giant Walgreens last August, is set to slash 700 “non-store based roles". Those affected will be subject to redeployment, retraining or redundancy schemes.

The Walgreens push to reduce costs will see Boots focusing on customer engagement, new technology and streamlining its support operations.

Simon Roberts, president of Boots, said: “While we have continued to deliver a solid performance in recent years, despite challenging market conditions, we cannot be complacent and must be stronger and more agile going forward, to meet the fast changing expectations of our customers.

“I believe this plan will make Boots even better for our customers and drive sustainable future growth… we have not taken these decisions lightly, and understand the impact that today’s announcement may have on our colleagues.”

Robert’s concluded: “We are fully committed to doing everything we can to support all our people as we transform Boots and strive to be even better for our customers and patients.”

The high-street regular has a total of 2,511 stores in the UK.
