Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has said that having to leave the show following a punch-up with a producer has left a “big hole that needs to be filled”.

Speaking on Chris Evans’s BBC2 Radio breakfast show, the controversial host said on the BBC deciding not to renew his contract: “I was very sad, it was my own silly fault so I could hardly complain.”

“I was at the BBC for 27 years, and on the current incarnation for 12. It was very much my baby, I absolutely adored it, I worked all through the night and paid attention to every tiny bit and then suddenly you are not asked to do that anymore.

“You feel that there is a big hole that needs to be filled.”

On a potential return to the BBC he reminded host Evans “I’m not sacked, remember?”

For those awaiting the final three episodes of the latest season which were canned following his suspension, he concluded that they "weren’t the strongest films, they weren’t bad".

News emerged earlier this month that the former Top Gear trio are in talks with ITV about launching a new show - rumours also involve an alleged discussion with Netflix.
