Google has issued an apology after racist Google Map searches in the Washington DC area were found to direct users to the White House.

‘N***** house’ and ‘n***** king’ searches on the Google Maps service were found to direct users to the home of president Barack Obama, in an anomaly first outlined by the Washington Post.

Google issued an apology for the issue – which it failed to explain: “Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologise for any offence this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly.”

Google has faced a number of issues with its mapping services of late.

Most notably it canned its Map Maker service after one decorated contributor created a graphic of the Andorid mascot urinating on the Apple icon.
