Warner Music has announced a landmark shift in its music distribution model with streaming revenue surpassing download revenue for the first time.

In Monday’s Q2 earnings call, music streaming revenue grew by a full third - boosting overall digital growth to seven per cent. On the otherhand downloads decreased by an unspecified volume although the report stated “declines in download revenue are expected to be a continuing trend”.

Stephen Cooper, Warner Music Group chief executive said: “We experienced significant revenue growth this quarter across key segments of our business – in particular recorded music, across the US and international and across digital and physical – capping off a strong first half of our fiscal year.

"Notably, in this quarter we saw continued growth in streaming revenue which surpassed download revenue for the first time in the history of our recorded music business. Our commitment to being at the forefront of industry change as well as our ongoing investment in artist development is the foundation of our continued success."

With the exception of digital, all other revenue streams, such as physical sales, declined. Digital represented 43.9 per cent of revenue – with net income sitting as $19m.
