The Thomson holidays name could go the way of the dodo after parent firm TUI group announced a rebranding exercise for the venerable package holiday pioneer.

This could see it absorbed within fellow group stablemates such as First Choice Holidays as well as Dutch firm Arke and Marmara in France as part of a unification push for most of its brands with a single logo, first introduced in 2001 as part of a harmonisation drive.

Taking this idea to its logical conclusion the firm told investors during the announcement of its half-year results that it would gradually bring the TUI brand to the forefront in European markets within the next three years.

This step would include branding on the businesses fleet of five airlines, with Thomson Airways, TUIfly, TUIfly Nordic, Jetairfly and Arkefly brought under a single British based banner to streamline costs.

Other subsidiaries set for an overhaul include bringing its Thomson Cruise and Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten services under the wing of its joint venture with Royal Carribean.
