A detailed audience analysis of the three leaders debates held in advance of the UK general election this Thursday (7 May) has found that a combined 12.9 million viewers tuned into watch the broadcast duels, with 6.2 million seeing tweets about the debates.

Figures compiled by Kantar Media show that 2.6 million switched on the Battle for No.10 on 26 March and 6.3 million watched the ITV Leaders Debate on 2 April, with 4 million tuning into the BBC Election Debate on 14 April.

This engagement was bolstered by the number of viewers who saw tweets about each debate, calculated as 2 million and 2.2 million respectively.

The most tweeted comment made during the ITV debate came in the unlikely guise of football pundit Gary Linekar, who logged onto say: “Always reluctant to give a political vierw, but Farage is a dick!”

The data was accrued from BARB data and Kantar Twitter TV ratings.
