The ZX Spectrum is to make a return this month after raising more than £150,000 through crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in less than two days.

The updated version of the 1980s gaming system comes preloaded with 1,000 games, including Hungry Horace, Desert Patrol 3D, Tank Command and more.

Sir Clive Sinclair, the inventor of Spectrum, said the "great success" of the Indiegogo campaign had allowed production to happen quite quickly with an initial 1,000 consoles set to be shipped to those who pledged money this month.

"Crowdfunding is really an inventor's dream, because it can not only bring in the finance needed to get to market but also it's a test of how the market is likely to react to the product," said Sinclair.

Paul Andrews, managing director of Retro Computers, which makes the device, commented: "It's a growing trend, as people look back nostalgically to what was their youth in the 70s and 80s, when technology started becoming part of everybody's lives rather than the elite few."

Another 3,000 devices will be shipped next month with a further 10,000 planned for later in the summer if the £100 console proves popular.
