Just Eat has named former HarperColliins Publishers marketing boss Barnaby Dawe as its chief marketing officer.

He will lead the online takeaway service’s marketing strategy and sits on the board.

Dawe is tasked with plotting the brand’s growth in a marketplace where performance-driven tactics such as paid search are regularly called on to gain a competitive edge.

Given its status as the dominant player in parts of Europe, the chain has opted for a more brand-focused strategy, most recently in the UK last year when it ran a nationwide outdoor push to drum up awareness.

Just Eat chief executive David Buttress said: “Our brand is one of the key pillars of our success, which we are committed to strengthen and evolve with the fast changing pace of the market. Barnaby brings a strong track record of building and developing leading brands and will be a great addition to our leadership team as we continue on our journey to become the top-of-mind destination for takeaway food customers in Just Eat’s 13 countries.”

Prior to his stint at HaperCollins, Dawe was marketing director at News International and has also held senior roles at Turner Entertainment, Heart FM and BskyB.

Dawe replaces Matt Braddy, who stood down from the role at the end of 2014 but stayed on as a brand advisor to the board while he set up a Tinder-like salon booking service.
