The sudden onset of live-streaming apps like Meerkat and Periscope could threaten the premier of HBO’s Game of Thrones this weekend. However, HBO is prepared.

Adweek, who first reported the possibility, argued that live-streaming could make piracy easier than ever before.

Live streamers could simply hold their devices up to their TV screens and stream the show to countless viewers.

Last year, the Game of Thrones was the most illegally downloaded series worldwide. However, Twitter, owners of Periscope, are adamant that it will do anything possible to protect the property of copyright holders.

Still, HBO has a plan.

“An HBO spokesperson said it had anti-piracy plans in place for the premiere of Game of Thrones, but giving specifics would be ‘counterproductive’ to the problem,” Adweek wrote.

Even with these plans in place, no network will truly know how to protect against Meerkat and Periscope television theft until such piracy begins.
