Pentagram has rolled out a new identity for Bike New York, the city’s nonprofit advocate for biking as a practical and healthy means of transportation.

Along with the identity, the update includes a redesign of the Bike New York website, cycling guides and other collateral ahead of the organisation’s biggest events, including Bike Expo New York next month.

It is hoped the refresh, led by Pentagram partner Emily Oberman, will help the organisation better engage and connect with New York's cyclists as the network of bike lines begins to grow in the city.

Inspired by the straightforward visual icons of street signage, the letter-based logo is composed of stencil-like shapes that illustrate the organisation’s name: The letters 'NY' form the frame of a bike. A series of hand-drawn versions of the logo have been animated for the Bike New York website.

“Biking in New York could seem a little scary or dangerous,” commented Oberman.

“But in the past few years it’s become something anyone can do, and the city has adapted nicely. Bike New York has been instrumental in this transition. We wanted the identity to have a spirit of inclusiveness, but with a street culture edge.”

Bike New York is also hoping to reach out to new riders and become their go-to source for biking knowledge. The group provides free bicycle classes for riders at all skill levels, as well as lessons in related topics like bike maintenance, commuting, and how to buy a bike.
