Netflix can now cancel the subscriptions of any users streaming the service via a virtual private network (VPN).

As it stands, Netflix offerings differ from country to country, making some country’s offerings more desirable than others. Viewers have learned that they can bypass this system by accessing the service through a VPN, which allows them the opportunity to pretend to be in whatever country they want.

While Netflix has said it is working to standardize viewing options worldwide, new terms of service now state that it “may terminate or restrict your use of our service, without compensation or notice if you are, or if (it) suspects that you are… engaged in illegal or improper use of the service.”

However, the change doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Netflix will exercise this power. Rather, it could be a way for the brand to protect itself legally if movie and television studios question the practice.
