Twitter is facing a class action lawsuit after a former female software engineer claimed the company's promotion process unlawfully favours men.

The lawsuit was filed by Tina Huang in San Francisco on Thursday (19 March).

In it, she claims there was a "black box" style of promotions at the company where opportunities for promotion were informed via a “shoulder tap” rather than formal job posting.

Huang added that the largely male upper management was responsible for hiring decisions resulting in an environment that favoured men.

Citing her own experience, Huang claims she was overlooked for a promotion and subsequently fired after voicing concerns.

However, Twitter said she left the company on her own terms and that it was committed to "a diverse and supportive workplace."
