Yahoo has announced a retreat from China which will cost 350 jobs as part of the company’s general cost-cutting scheme.

Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer initiated the scheme to shutter the Beijing research centre following the company shifting the bulk of its Chinese infrastructure to Alibaba as far back as 2005.

A Yahoo spokesman said that around 350 jobs would be eliminated in China, adding: “We are constantly making changes to align resources, and to foster better collaboration and innovation across our business.”

The cuts represent around two per cent of the entire global Yahoo workforce as the company looks to streamline its structure.

The company stopped its Chinese email service in 2013 instead directing web users to sign up with Alibaba – a company which it has a significant stake in.
