Blippar, the world’s largest image recognition and augmented reality platform, announces the launch of a visual search app.

The free-to-download re-launch version of it's existing app will allow users to take photographs of any object that will return relevant information from across the globe, including social media feeds.

Demonstrating the capabilities live during an exclusive preview at SXSW, Blippar's CEO Ambarish Mitra enrolled the assistance of a real puppy. Using the 'new generation' app, Mitra took a photo of the surprise guest and the visual search pulled in details about the breed of dog alongside some other interesting facts.

The app will be made available for download on IOS and Android in April, initially making all English-language album covers, fiction books, DVD covers and movie posters Blippable.

The longer term grand plan is for the entire physical world to be searchable via mobile devices and wearables including landmaks, animals and even fruits.

Mitra told The Drum; "This would not compete with word based search engines" and added "What Google did with the web we want to do to with the world".
