You might expect that securing fresh talent for the world’s number one social media site would be difficult but Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed he follows one simple rule to minimise risk, ‘I will only hire someone to work directly for me if I would work for that person’, he told an audience at Mobile World Congress.

Speaking during a question and answer session Zuckerberg added that ‘Facebook is not a company for everyone in the world’ but one person Zuckerberg clearly does have confidence in is Sheryl Sandberg, his right hand woman serving as chief operating officer whom Zuckerberg referred to as a ‘mentor’.

Despite the scale of the business Facebook currently employs fewer than 10,000 people, far less than the likes of Google which now has close to 55,000 employees.

Commenting on this litheness Zuckerberg said: “The most important thing is to keep your team as small as possible," he went on. "[Facebook] serves more than a billion people around the world but our team has fewer than 10,000 people.

"It's only possible because of modern technology. Big companies get bloated."

With his parting words Zuckerberg then addressed to the next generation of entrepreneurs with some sage advice, “When you’re young you hear that you don’t have experience to do things, that there are people that have more experience than you. I started Facebook when I was 19," he said.

“Don’t discount yourself, no matter what you’re doing. Everyone has a unique perspective that they can bring to the world.”
