Billionaire supermarket mogul and former New York City mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis could be the man looking to buy the New York Daily News, according the New York Post.

Catsimatidis is the president, chairman, and CEO of grocery chain Gristedes. He confirmed to the Post that he has been negotiating with owner of the News Mort Zuckerman for about a month.

A Daily News spokesman told the Post that the paper will not comment on the numbers or names of potential suitors.

Last week, Zuckerman said in a memo to employees that the tabloid was approached about its “potential interest in selling the Daily News.”

In his note to staff, he said: "Although there were no immediate plans to consider a sale, we thought it would be prudent to explore the possibility and talk to potential buyers and/or investors,” adding that he had retained Lazard, a financial advisory firm, to help with the process.

Earlier this week, the Post reported that Madison Square Garden and Cablevision exec James Dolan was interested in buying the Daily News.

A spokesman for Madison Square Garden and Dolan declined to comment as did a representative for the Daily News, reported the Post.
