#TheDress gets more than 1.5m mentions online

Since conversations on social media exploded on Thursday evening after a Scottish woman named Caitlin McNeill posted a photo of the white and gold or blue and black dress on Tumblr, it has gotten more than 1.5m mentions in online conversations, according to Brandwatch.

In fact 'the dress' became one of the most talked about issues on social media yesterday, which prompted The Drum to invite Brandwich to give their insights.

One of the top hashtags was “#TheDress,” with more than 566,000 tweets and retweets. Out of the more than 1.5m mentions, Brandwatch took a sampling to find that 52 per cent of people believed the dress to be black and blue, 45 per cent white and gold, with 4 per cent saying they saw both.

The 1.5m mentions include Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, Youtube, and other social channels, as well as news websites such as the Daily Mail, Buzzfeed, and MSN.

However, about 98 per cent of the mentions came from Twitter, according to Brandwatch.

Demographics - The Dress

The llama drama story that also captured eyeballs on Thursday, where two llamas escaped in Phoenix and were chased by authorities for hours, was overshadowed by dress hype, with the hashtag “#LlamaDrama” receiving 78,650 tweets and retweets. The hashtag “#Llamas” had more than 71,500 tweets and retweets.

There were nearly 50,000 mentions of the llama story within conversations around the dress.
