The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has confirmed that Friday will be the international day for new music releases.

The change was in part spurred by Beyonce’s surprise album release in late 2013, according to Billboard.

As of now, release days vary from country to country. This has caused frustration amongst consumers when fans in different parts of the world have access to new music before them.

IFPI said the move will also help artists who want to use social media to promote their new music while creating a sense of occasion around new releases.

The change will also help reduce the risk of piracy by narrowing the gap of releases. Beginning this summer, albums as well as singles will be released at 00:01, local time, on Fridays.

Research by TNS shows that among consumers who expressed an opinion, more than two-thirds had a preference of either Friday or Saturday.

IFPI represents 1300 record labels worldwide.
