Visa’s digital payment service has expanded into seven new markets as it looks to combat PayPal for a dominant share of the e-payment industry.

Visa Checkout, which launched in the US, Canada and Australia in July 2014, currently boasts over three million accounts, although that number is set to boom with the service today (Thursday 19 February) opening up to ten markets.

Visa Checkout will enable secure computer, tablet or mobile phone-based digital payments with participating vendors, in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Hong Kong, Peru, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and United Arab Emirates, by the close of 2015.

Sam Shrauger, senior vice president of Digital Solutions at Visa, said: “Visa Checkout has seen tremendous growth in the US, Canada and Australia in just the few months since its launch.

“Consumers and merchants alike love its simplicity and ease, which is particularly important as people shop and buy more frequently on smaller devices like phones and tablets. Building on this positive momentum, we are aggressively carrying the service into new markets across the world throughout 2015 and beyond.”

This comes after Samsung picked up LoopPay, a firm specialising in turning magnetic strip readers into secure and contactless receivers.
