Netflix has blamed a ‘technical glitch’ after it inadvertently posted the third season of its acclaimed House of Cards political drama a full two weeks before its publicised premier.

The season in its entirety was uploaded to the streaming service and available to view for a full 20 minutes before the mistake was realised and staff were able to pull the content, giving some eagle-eyed fans a sneak peak at what awaits them.

Laughing off the incident with a tongue in cheek tweet Netflix said: “This is Washington. There's always a leak. All 13 episodes will launch February 27."

Although the content was only live for minutes some users claimed that they were able to view full episodes that they had begun to watch prior to the plug being pulled.

News of the leak spread like wildfire on Twitter in the immediate aftermath with 55,000 tweets about the show being issued in the first hour following the leak.
