Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is to take his social media ethos into the real world through construction of a $400m company town incorporating staff housing, shops and a hotel close to its Silicon Valley base at Menlo Park.

Harking back to Victorian style cradle to grave care for employees the initiative marks an increasingly fierce battle by tech juggernauts to recruit and retain top talent, with many supplementing pay with a range of perks and bonuses.

These include private, unlimited free food and exclusive homes, all of which have served to insulate employees from the real world.

Designed to integrate with the existing community rather than stand apart within a gated compound the new development is the latest physical expansion of a company which now dominates the online world.

Facebook is currently in process of moving into a new Frank Gehry designed headquarters.
