Zanny Minton Beddoes has become the first ever female editor of the Economist in the publication’s 170-year history.

Zanny Minton Beddoes

Beddoes, who has been at the magazine since 1994, replaces former editor John Micklethwait whose nine year tenure in the role has come to an end. She will vacate her role of business editor as a result.

She will take over from Micklethwait, whose time as the head of the magazine saw its circulation grow from 1.1m to 1.6m.

Rupert Pennant-Rea, chairman of the Economist Group, and former editor of The Economist, said: “The board has chosen Zanny as editor, someone who is a fine leader, with long experience on the paper. She will be a true advocate for The Economist and its values.”

Beddoes added: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to edit The Economist. It is one of journalism’s great institutions, with an extraordinarily talented staff.”

She will take up her new the role on 2 February.
