A new report analysing global trends in the digital, social and mobile landscape has found that an additional half a billion people have logged onto the internet for the first time over the past year, increasing the total number of internet users by 20 per cent.

These increases were mirrored in social media usage which rose 12 per cent year-on-year and mobile use which increased by 23 per cent over the same period.

Combining data from 240 surveyed countries the report, compiled by Wearesocial, calculated that more than half the world’s population now own a mobile phone, with 185m new owners having purchased a phone since January last year – bringing the total number of mobile phone users to 3.65bn.

Drilling down into the stats further the social marketing agency found that not only are more people accessing the internet but those that do are lingering online longer, with the average internet user now spending 4h and 25min per day online.
