Hidalgo claimed the broadcaster had “insulted” the city which she governs by making inaccurate comments about the Muslim population in the city - with Fox also landing in hot water for making similar claims about Birmingham.

The French mayor said: “When we're insulted, and when we've had an image, then I think we'll have to sue, I think we'll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed.

“The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced."

The statement was issued in response to comments made on Fox about French Muslims during a show called Fox & Friends.Co-host Anna Kooiman issued an apology on Saturday: “We showed a map of neighbourhoods in France labelled as no-go zones [and] some of the neighbourhoods were highlighted incorrectly,” she added: “We apologize for the error."

Due to its coverage of the Charlie Hebdo shootings Fox on Saturday issued four separate apologies.
