Jaguar Land Rover is to tighten up vehicle safety with the development of an intelligent car seat capable of ‘tapping’ the wearer when a cyclist or motorcyclist attempts to overtake.

The dangerous manoeuvre is a leading cause of accidents due to driver’s blind spot but the new system should get round that by triggering a reflex look over the shoulder reaction on the part of the driver.

Dubbed Bike Sense the system is plugged into motion sensors placed on the car body which are calibrated to detect the approach of two wheeled vehicles. When an onboard computer determines that the signals it is receiving it will play a bicycle bell noise or motorbike horn respectively – using a left or right speaker depending on the direction of approach.

To hammer home the message an LED dashboard will illuminate in the estimated direction of travel of the bike, changing colour from amber to red as it nears. Such a system would also be active when the vehicle is at rest to prevent passengers from inadvertently opening a car door onto an approaching rider.
