Supermarket chain Morrison’s has agreed a multimillion pound sponsorship deal with the Great North Run, succeeding existing headline sponsor Bupa.

The deal will see the retailer promote its brand at a dozen running events held throughout Britain in what is the biggest sporting tie-up in the chains history, commencing this weekend with Edinburgh’s Great Winter Run.

It comes at a time of increased competition between Britain’s big four supermarkets; including Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s, as they battle to hold onto market share amidst increased competition from budget chains Aldi and Lidl.

The sponsorship deal follows a period of retrenchment at Morrisons which has seen it take an axe to jobs and prices in a bid to maintain competitiveness.
