Across the world, there will be 1.91bn smartphone users in 2015, a figure that will increase another 12.6 per cent to reach nearly 2.16bn in 2016.

By 2018, eMarketer estimates that more than one-third of the world's population, or more than 2.56bn people, will have a smartphone.

This figure will see just over half (51.7 per cent) of mobile phone users in 2018 using smartphones.

Other predictions made by eMarketer for the future of smartphones include that in 2016 India will exceed 200 million smartphone users, topping the US as the world's second largest smartphone market.

The US will then reach 200m smartphone users, with 65 per cent of the total population using smartphones, by 2017.
