Scottish Referendum, Ice Bucket Challenge and World Cup the most talked about topics on Facebook in UK
The Scottish Referendum was the most talked about subject on Facebook in the UK in the last year, while the World Cup dominated the global conversation, Facebook has revealed.
The UK top 10 list
Announcing its 'Year In Review' statistics for 2014, the social networkound that there were 3.3m UK interactions related to the referendum, 1.9m of which took place in Scotland on the day of the referendum itself, with over 10m conversations taking place in the five weeks up to the event.
Ice Bucket Challenge is number two on the UK list – globally 17m videos related to the ice bucket challenge were shared on Facebook, with these videos shared over 10bn times by more than 440m people.
The World Cup, Premier League title race, conflict in Gaza and the First World War Centenary also made the top 10 talked about UK topics on Facebook, with the full list seen below.
On the global front, over 350m people had 3bn interactions on Facebook (comments, likes, and posts) about the World Cup – making it the most talked about event on Facebook since the platform started measuring conversation around events.
The ebola outbreak came second, with Facebook having been part of the conversation itself by launching a donation feature on the platform, to help fight the virus.
Robin Williams’ death also struck a chord on Facebook, with nearly 6m people ‘liking’ his page following the actor’s suicide. Stars including Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Spacey, Taylor Swift and Whoopi Goldberg turned to Facebook to pay tribute.
