BlackBerry is to target the burgeoning health services market with the release of a new medical tool designed to assist doctors in diagnosing cancer by securely accessing patient’s medical data.

This enables doctors to view and analyse biopsy test results as soon as they become available instead of waiting several weeks, where they may be forced to make treatment decisions without access to the data.

Developed in partnership with IT provider NantHealth the specialised browser for cancer specialists is designed to win back BlackBerry’s core business and enterprise customer base after failing to penetrate the consumer market.

The new browser tool will come preloaded on BlackBerry’s Passport smartphone early in the new year but isn’t expected to be anything more than a niche device.

BlackBerry acquired a minority stake in NantHealth in April.
