Apple has arrested its long-term decline in market share over the last quarter following the release of the iPhone 6, whose big screen models have translated into even bigger sales.

Figures published by kantar Worldpanel show that in the three months up to 31 October Apple’s share of the market grew at the expense of Google’s Android, which has seen its share stagnate or even decline in most markets.

This was apparent in the UK where Android penetration slipped from 54.6 to 52.3 per cent year-on-year for the period whilst Windows suffered an even larger setback, slipping from 12 to 7.7 per cent.

Sole beneficiary of this slippage was Apple whose share cranked up from 29.1 to 39.5 per cent.

Kantar’s Dominic Sunnebo commented: “Apple has experienced a huge jump in sales share across almost all major markets thanks to the launch of the iPhone 6. Most of these sales were driven by loyal Apple users. Some 86% of British buyers upgraded from an older iPhone model, only 5% switched across from Samsung.”

In the UK the iPhone 6 has been outselling the iPhone 6 Plus by four to one with the majority of buyers, 64 per cent, being male.
