Amazon is set to make inroads to the lucrative online parcel market after announcing that it would henceforth switch from existing carriers such as the Royal Mail in favour of its own network of delivery vans,

The move marks an effort by the online retailer to provide a better service for shoppers by offering reliable deliveries, ore accurate delivery times and Sunday services.

Parcels had been cited as the saving grace for Royal mail which has long suffered a fall in letters being sent, now it faces seeing future growth constrained to no more than 2 per cent as the parcel business it had pinned such hopes on looks like evaporating.

Roy Perticucci, Amazon’s European head, said: “The primary driver . . . is to be able to handle capacity and the time promise made to customers. We are looking at continuously shortening click-to-delivery times; increasing delivery accuracy — the number of times we get it right first time — and being able to handle volumes across the week, including Sunday pick-ups and Sunday deliveries.”

In a double blow Royal mail is already facing increased pressure from the expansion of challenger service Whistl.
