Taylor Swift received just under $500,000 in revenue from Spotify in the US in the last 12 months with the paltry sum allegedly causing her exodus from the music streaming service.

Taylor Swift received £2m internationally from Spotify this year

Scott Borchetta, the head of Swift’s record label ‘Big Machine’, told Time on Wednesday that the pop star received just $496,044 from US streamers in the last 12 months despite the Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek claiming an artist of her calibre could make as much as $6m annually.

Worldwide, from the 61 (or so) countries the service is available in, Swift earned $2m in revenue according to a Spotify spokesman. Borchetta stated that Swift received more from streaming her videos on music video site Vevo than she ever did on Spotify.

On Wednesday there was even more bad news for Spotify after YouTube announced a music video streaming service - ‘Music Key’.
