WPP chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell has likened Publicis Groupe’s $3.7bn acquisition of Sapient to the behaviour of a “jilted lover”.

Responding to The Drum about the news which was announced this morning, Sorrell said: "Looks like the behaviour of a jilted lover. Christmas came early for Sapient share owners."

He added: "Sapient seem to have caught Maurice on the rebound."

The all-cash transaction will result in the creation of a new platform called Publicis.Sapient, which will be spearheaded by Sapient chief executive and co-chairman Alan J Herrick.

The buyout will see one of the last remaining major independent agencies - Sapient Nitro - snapped up by a holding group.
