Whilst most people are desperate to upgrade to the very latest Apple device to roll off the Cupertino production line one wealthy aficionado is desperate to head in the opposite direction – with the world’s biggest downgrade.
A mystery buyer splashed out $905k at a New York auction to snap up an Apple-1, one of the now famous firms first ever pre-assembled computers of which only around 50 were ever produced – in the garage of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1976.
Few of these pioneering devices survive, inflating the price tag considerably from its original RRP of $666.66, equivalent to around $2,786 at today’s prices – although the lucky buyer did bag a vintage keyboard, original power supply and a Sanyo monitor as part of the deal.
It is believed that only around 15 of these original devices remain in working order with one, including a signed letter from Steve Jobs, earlier fetching $671k
