D&AD has announced that its In Book and Nomination Awards are to be replaced with two newly design Pencils.

Coming into effect from the 2015 Professional Awards, the changes are part of an Awards-wide refresh which hopes to bring greater clarity and coherence to the existing levels.

From next year D&AD will award Wood and Graphite Pencils as the equivalent bronze and silver levels respectively.

Tim Lindsay, D&AD chief executive, explained: “The D&AD Pencil is a universal icon that resonates across our industry as the pinnacle of creative achievement. D&AD is renowned for being the toughest, most rigorous show around, yet In Book and Nomination, as awards, are often undervalued or simply misunderstood. So we set out to rectify this, but without handing out more awards and without compromising our existing Pencils.”

Lindsay added that D&AD had “wanted to make things clearer” but did not want to adopt “the same system as everyone else”.

“Admittedly, finding a satisfactory solution hasn’t been easy. But our new Wood and Graphite Pencils strike the perfect balance of being instantly recognisable and achieving that degree of clarity, but with a D&AD twist,” he said.

Turner Duckworth designed the new Pencils that will be incorporated across all D&AD Awards Programmes, including New Blood and the new Next series.

The full line-up now reads – Wood, Graphite, Yellow, White and Black Pencil with D&AD’s two special awards – Most Awarded and President’s Award.
