Apple Pay to launch this weekend according to memo leak
The Apple Pay digital payment service, which allows iPhone 6 users to tap-to-pay for goods using near field communications, will be launched Saturday 18 October according to company documents leaked by 9to5mac.com.
Apple pay will be release in the US on the 20 September
The leaked memo said that Apple Store employees will have to take part in a one hour training session this week to learn how to accept the payments following a US launch this weekend. Furthermore, the service will likely be announced at a media event on the two days earlier when the new iPad will be unveiled.
McDonalds, Starbucks and Subway have already signed up to use the Apple Pay service with many more firms expected to follow in November. The service which uses the smartphone’s fingerprint scanner to validate transactions was reported to go fully live on the 20 October with an update to the iOS 8 operating service. However, the latest leak suggests that Apple Pay will be released in some form even earlier.
Apple CEO Tim Cook called card payments outdated at the iPhone 6 launch event: “This whole process is based on this little piece of plastic, whether it’s a credit or debit card.
“We’re totally reliant on the exposed numbers, and the outdated and vulnerable magnetic interface, which by the way is five decades old, and the security codes which all of us know aren’t so secure.”
The tech-firm has partnered with payment leaders Visa, American Express and Mastercard to ensure that the service is secure, with shops never accessing payment details - as they would with chip and pin services.
