English footballer Wayne Rooney has proven he is as skilled off the pitch as on it after penning a trio of tweets to fans in Italy, Spain and Indonesia… each in their native language.

The multilingual posts illustrate the global fan base which Rooney now commands, three quarters of whom reside abroad, a feat which recently saw the star attain 10m followers on the micro blogging platform.

Attempting to build on this support Rooney’s PR team offered a match-worn United shirt to those who retweeted him, prompting 17,000 Indonesians to do just that.

Rooney was recently declared the fifth most followed footballer in the world by a Twitter study although Cristiano Ronaldo remains the most popular by a country mile with 30m followers.

This is despite a daily barrage of some less than profound insights from the footballer whose commentary typically consists of bland platitudes and sponsored plugs, such as : “Great win last night. Fans were great thank you again.”
