McDonalds and Starbucks jump in at the deep end in adopting Apple Pay

The world’s biggest chain of fast food restaurants McDonalds is to be among the first merchants to integrate Apple Pay, the phone-payment platform that Apple unveiled last week.

Apple said the platform will launch in October in the US at McDonalds and Starbucks as well as restaurant brand Panera Bread and Subway the sandwich chain.

McDonald’s said it would accept Apple Pay at “virtually all” of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants when it is released in October.

“There are just a handful that won’t be able to accept it initially, but over time that will be worked out,” a spokeswoman told Nation's Restaurant News.

Global chief digital officer, senior vice presiden Atif Rafiq, said: “Apple’s transformative mobile payments service brings a new level of convenience to McDonald’s customers, allowing them to instantly pay and stay, or pay and be on their way.”

Panera Bread said Apple Pay will be “an easy, secure and private way to make purchases” at its 1,818 units via the just-introduced iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watch.

“We're proud to be one of the first retailers to accept Apple Pay…. For us, it's a natural extension of Panera 2.0, which brings together digital ordering, multiple payment options and improved operational processes to deliver an enhanced guest experience,” said Blaine Hurst, Panera’s chief technology and transformation officer, in a statement.

Apple Pay will also be used for mobile orders, Panera said. It will be available in all participating Panera units in the United States once Apple Pay hits the marke tnext month. l.

David Pogue, technology columnist for Yahoo said in a Tweet: “If anyone has a chance to make wireless payments ‘a Thing,’ it’s Apple. It’s persuading stores and online companies to accept Apple Pay.”

Other possible US joiners by the end of the year: Disney Seamless, Instacart, store chain Nordstrom.

Apple said, “Currently, making purchases on a mobile device is tedious at best. Apple Pay is also going to make buying stuff through apps easier, more secure and private.”

NCR , whose technologies process more than 485 million consumer transactions a day,said, “Apple Pay is important to the industries NCR serves as it drives forward mobile payment technology, and with it, the ability for more secure digital payments and enhanced digital marketing capabilities.”

Jimmy Fortuna, NCR chief technology officer, said in a statement: “With Apple Pay, Apple has transformed mobile payments and will have an impact on the industry like never before.

“We are thrilled to be working closely with Apple to help retail and hospitality customers integrate this new method of payment into their operations, providing an easy, safe and secure way to pay with a single touch.”
